It is a commonly known fact that the Serbs aren't fond of Muslims. On a personal level, my husband had been told by his Serb uncle that a Muslim man shouldn't be permitted to marry a Christian woman. Obviously , he was devastated and didn't return to our place for 2 months. Then, he was ready to undergo marriage with a Christian woman only if there was no immediate threat to his own life.

Fortunatelyhe escaped to Canada where he could wed a beautiful woman without fear of repercussions. Regrettably, his experience is not an isolated one. In Belgrade he observed the way the Muslim man beat up a Christian woman because she did not complete a spiritual test. The woman later died from her injuries.

In fact, this episode took place before my eyes and I failed to intervene. That's why I use the"No" option once I fill the" Volunteering in my Own Nation" self assessment form. But it should be said that the exact same cannot be said about the volunteer services in Afghanistan and Iraq. There have been several instances of violence and rape against minorities. The victims are Muslims and Christians alike.

I can only hope that the authorities of Serbia will soon introduce a law that prohibits all forms of discrimination irrespective of gender, religion or race. I was surprised to find out that the government of Serbia has nothing great to propose as far as the safety of minority communities is worried. There is not any legal provision for victims of crimes to file for compensation from the criminals. Therefore, filling the"Volunteering in my country" self evaluation form is absolutely voluntary.

 

In such a scenario, any man or woman who would like to assist the disadvantaged people of his country should do so with no sense of shame. According to a recent survey, nine out of every ten Serbs consider themselves as good philanthropists! This is quite an wonderful figure when you come to consider it. It also goes to show that not all them are selfish or egoistic. There are a few very real feelings of empathy and concern that they wish to help other people in need.
